how to make a topmod like knot inside cinema 4d

i had to resize the image to fit onto the deviantart website , the downloadable file includes the original sized image 2700x21000 jpeg , i also included the basic object
which is a c4d r13 file and the single images just in case , i also included the render on top of the tutorial in 1600x900 jpeg

it is basically just a chrome material with the color scheme on yellow .
first thing you do is turn of color and specular , then you turn on reflection and put blue on about 120 and green on about 220 ( those are the pure basics , don't remember the exact numbers so just play around with it until you're happy with the look )

I don't know how it work on C4D but on 3dsmax I would have used more mirror to create the shape. It would have allowed to work on only one half of a loop.

i see your point but wouldn't that also mean that one change on one side applies to all sides
which would make the object less flexible?

If you used it only for construction and then collapse the modifiers, you can animate it like any other mesh.

On your exemple, all your loops are identical but your method is better for different loops.

i will keep your approach in mind and try it out next time

keep in mind that my example is just the pure basics but you already stated that it is better for different sized loops

More for different shaped loops.

In 3D, there's always different way to do the same thing. Some people prefer one or another and, depending of the experience of the people, it's not necessaraly the same that is the quickier. The important is to know different ways to use the good one when it's needed.

the good one is the one you're most familiar with and that is why i love 3d so much, because in 3d all roads lead to rome

sized , shaped , twisted , bend ... whatever you want to call it

Interesting to see how you would do it in C4D. I think topmod is much quicker and makes a nicer mesh though and it's easy to import into C4D.

you have to keep in mind that this is just the pure basics of what is possible and i do know that you only have to click a couple of buttons in topmod to make something like this but i am more interested
in finding out how to make things like this directly inside c4d

Exactly! The more stuff like this you do, the more solid you become at modelling and topology. There will always be an easier way to do things, but that's not always the best way. I cant see anything wrong with the topology here. Good stuff :)

exactly, if you don't push yourself to find solutions to a problem you will never improve your work
